LNWR 1054 'Coal Tank'

The Coal Tank

Owned by The National Trust, 1054 was built at the Crewe works of the London & North Western Railway in 1888.

It was withdrawn from service in 1958 and purchased privately in 1960 following a public appeal for funds. The engine was handed over to The National Trust in 1964 and for nine years was on display at Penrhyn Castle in North Wales.  1054 was placed in the care of the Society and restored to working order in 1980.

It is currently undergoing its third overhaul in the workshop at Ingrow.
The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Although the workshop is normally closed to the public, visitors may view progress on 1054 from the upper gallery of the museum. Guided viewing may be possible upon request, but will be dependant upon the nature of on-going work and our health and safety policy.

Group visits are available by prior arrangement
